Autumn in the Denver Botanic Gardens

It has become a yearly tradition for us to visit the Denver Botanic Gardens on York Street. We usually plan our visit in the Spring, typically in May or June. At that time things are just getting started. We usually see the end of the tulips blooming but the roses and peonies are just beginning and the lilacs fill the air with their lovely scent. It’s inspiring to me as a gardener to stroll through and see how their gardens look but also get to watch what they are planting.

This year I was really hoping to go in the Fall. We have never been there later in the year and we were wanting to see how everything looked at the end of the season. We were originally planning to go the end of the September but last minute plans made it so we couldn’t. Then October seemed to be getting away from me and I thought we might of missed the opportunity to get there. A freeze was teasing us in the forecast yet hadn’t arrived.

Then I did what I never do, make a last minute spontaneous decision. We got up, checked the water (looked good), bought tickets online, waited for rush hour traffic and went to the gardens.

I’m going to let the photos below show you just how beautiful the gardens are in the Fall but I want to share a thought about the timing of our visit. We were there just a tad over a week before Halloween and they had all of their spooky decorations out. Ghosts, reapers, skeletons, pumpkins in a lot of the gardens which meant they had areas you could not get into. The pumpkin displays were quite amazing but not what I wanted in my photos. They also had a lot of trees and bushes covered in lights. I had to be creative in my angels to photograph the gardens without all the other stuff. So I would try to plan this a little earlier (beginning of October) before they start decorating for Halloween. Unless you want that in your photos, then go the end of October.

Here is what caught my eye during our 3 hour stroll.

The pumpkins won’t last long with how the squirrels are feasting on them.
