Garden Rose Bouquet

Currently flowers seem to be in abundance in my life and it is reminding me of a time when I was somewhat newly married and wasn’t a mom yet. I worked part time at a professional photo lab and the other days I tended to house tasks with weekends saved for portrait sessions and weddings. I would bring home flowers from the grocery store often and spend the afternoon photographing them. I was still shooting film in those days so indoor shoots was a little more difficult but I loved the challenge.

Last week was all about this garden rose bouquet that was brought home from Trader Joe’s. The process is usually about the same. I make the bouquet and it sets in the kitchen. For the first couple of days I keep an eye on the flowers. I’m looking for something that stands out to me. The way the flowers are opening or how one bloom is shaped. When the inspiration hits then I start photographing it. Shifting, turning, pulled out, get in closer. Always open to what might appear in my camera as I’m exploring.

I cherish these moments of pure play. Letting everything else go quiet and removing all distractions if possible. It is just me, my camera and some vinyl spinning on the record player. It’s a gift and I will forever be grateful.
