A Robin’s Nest

A Robin's Nest, the amazing creativity and craft a robin has in building it's nest, photographed by photographer Brenda Landrum

We found this abandoned robins nest dangling from one of our juniper trees this spring. At first we decided to carefully place it back into the tree but then a few days later I found it dangling again. I was so inspired by its beauty I decided to place it in a shoebox and keep it. The robin that made it took the grass and dried plants in my garden and carefully crafted a nest for its egg to hatch from. There was just this one egg inside and it’s sitting exactly how I found it. It’s so beautiful and I really wanted to try to photograph it.

The first set of photos I took (not pictured) were on a white background and I happened to have a little mess of flower petals from a previous shoot that I nestled the nest into. It was pretty but the contrast of the white background didn’t feel quite right. So I grabbed the stack of rustic old wood pieces I have. This felt right! I love all the texture of the wood and the nest and also love the overall brown monotone color.

Then my daughter had the idea of adding the butterflies I saved from last year. Last year I found several butterflies and bees just dead in my garden and was keeping them. So we started playing around with those and I settled on the little white butterfly just sitting outside the nest to add an extra touch to a few frames.

I would love to know what you think of these images! Please leave a comment below. And thank you for stopping by the journal today, your time here is greatly appreciated.
